I am sure a lot of you have heard all the talk about autism recently. It is driving me mad. I don't know the actual stats right off the top of my head, but its something like 1 in 150 kids are autistic. Boys seem to be affected more, with a rate being close to 1 in 90. That is some crazy stuff.
Colter will be receiving his MMR shot in a few months. I have been trying to read up on all the articles about whether or not there is a link between autism and the MMR shot. I want to be sure I feel I am informed and make the right decision. I feel a bit sorry for our ped & his nurses. They will be interrogated hard at the next appointment.
On top of all this, the news has been talking about a website with a video library that demonstrates signs of autism. I am telling you, I think this is going to cause a lot of parents to freak. It has certainly caused me some anguish. I have watched most of the videos, and some of the things they show as signs, Colter does. I have never thought that there was anything wrong with him, however, after viewing this website, it has put a hint of doubt in my mind. I think it is an unnecessary. I am not telling you the link if you do not all ready know, because I think everyone may be able to find something on those videos that you can relate to your child. It should in no way be used to diagnose your child. I can see mass hysteria in the near future.
On a happier note, the sitter said Colter said "Hi there!" to her cat again today. Why does everyone else get in on all the fun. I guess the cat is more exciting than poor old mom. :O) Any how, I sometimes find it hard to believe, but today I was shocked when she told me. Every morning, I say to Colter, "Good morning. Hi there. How are you." And after every nap, I also say "Hi there." So he may have indeed said that. Perhaps he will say it to me one day.
That be all for today. Have a terrific Thursday!

Autism fuss

Colter does not have autism. From the things you have described him as doing, you have nothing to worry about. You would know if something was wrong. Not only because of Mother's Instinct, but there are significant signs that autistic children display. I have a coworker that has a 10 year old autistic child. He was diagnosed at 18 months as autistic. My coworker said he could just tell something was wrong. Also, my husband's brother has Asperger's Syndrome which is considered high functioning autism. My inlaws have said basically the same thing...they knew something was wrong. However, he was 3 when he was diagnosed because again it's a little different than actual autism.
And about the MMR stuff...there's more conclusive research pointing to MMR not causing autism. My ped said that she felt the benefits of getting the MMR greatly outweighed those of not getting the MMR. She said you never know who's carrying mumps, measles, or rubella. Even if your child is the only one not vaccinated, your child can still get those deadly diseases. She pointed out that autism is not deadly (but again, she does not believe MMR causes autism). Obviously, it is a personal choice. We did have Alec vaccinated. So far, so good.
I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding Colter. I think that the internet can be a bad thing when it comes to things like autism or any medical condition for that matter.
I heard about that autism site the other day on TV and thought for sure that it's going to cause some mass hystria. I think you are doing the right thing with researching the MMR shot and asking Colter's dr. all your questions. I'm sure you are not the only parent who has had these concerns :)!
I love the "Hi there" story! How cute is that!! One of these days he's going to surprise you and say it to you :)!
Have a great day Miah and don't worry about the autism stuff...Colter is perfectly normal :)!!
Lady, your son is perfectly healthy! I can sympathize with the "what do you believe" syndrome? Everywhere we look as a parent, we are getting conflicting information. It can get pretty frustrating at times. We had to make the decision for Chicken Pox, do we vacinate him or do we let him get them. We chose to wait on the vacination and see what happens. If he doesn't get them before school he has to have the shot anyway. Our preference I guess.
It is a head ache! Trying to figure it all out.
To cool on him talking!! It is amazing to me how evasive they can be! They know you want them to do something so they don't! Turkeys..
Miah - Colter is just fine. I know it is easy to get spooked when you are a mother and you always think the worst but Colter is just fine!! DON'T WORRY!!
Yeah on him talking! They always seem to do it when mom and dad aren't around. He is growing up way too darn fast!
All you can do is educate yourself and do what is best for you. That's what I'm doing. I worry that I won't do the right thing - only I don't know what the 'right' thing is. After all the research I've done, I REALLY do think they need to rethink the shot schedule.
1 in 94 boys will be autistic. It's alarming!
I understand that all the statistics get overwhelming. I never 2nd guessed the vaccines that my children get. But yet, I haven't had any reason too.
I love that Colter says HI THERE! One of the daycare moms said that her daughter says HI HONEY at home all the time. That is what I say to her...funny stuff!!
Try not to worry(I'm sure that is easier said than done as I tend to worry to) about Colter I'm sure he doesn't have autism.
Cute story about Colter saying HI There to the cat.
